I was browsing in Waterstones' Richmond branch on Sunday afternoon. A woman customer enquired about the work of Hunter S Thompson from one of the members of staff. Well, what this guy didn't know about the 'gonzo' writer wasn't worth talking about! He relayed his knowledge in the most professional and engaging manner. The customer was clearly pleased. Nice one, Waterstones for engaging such congenial staff. He was 30-35 with dark beard; but I have found all their staff equally approachable and knowledgable. I can assure you, I am gaining no pecuniary advantage from this testimonial! It's so much more human, don't you think, to consult an assistant than just diving into questionable Wikipedia entries or skimming Amazon's even more questionable reviews. I didn't earwig any longer as the latest book by Yorkshire author, Ross Raisin caught my eye. (Raisin's work had been recommended to me by poet and short story writer Rosie Allabarton.)
